Western Australia (WA) has always been a sought-after destination for skilled migrants looking to make a new start. The State Nominated Migration Program, managed by WA Migration Services on behalf of the WA State Government, offers a pathway for skilled individuals to live and work in this vibrant state. As we approach the 2023-2024 period, there have been some notable updates to the program. Here's a closer look at what's in store for potential migrants.
No Application Fee: One of the standout features of the program is the absence of an application fee. This makes the process more accessible to a wider range of applicants, ensuring that financial constraints don't hinder skilled individuals from applying.
Equal Invitation Ranking: Whether you're currently residing in another Australian state or overseas, the program offers an equal invitation ranking. This ensures a fair and unbiased selection process.
Prioritized Invitations: Recognizing the need for skilled workers in specific sectors, the program will prioritize invitations for candidates with occupations in WA industry sectors experiencing a critical demand for such workers.
Reduced Employment Requirements: In a bid to boost the building and construction industry, candidates invited through a WA building and construction industry sector occupation will benefit from reduced employment requirements.
The State Nominated Migration Program offers two primary streams for potential migrants: the General Stream and the Graduate Stream. Each stream has its own set of eligibility requirements tailored to cater to different groups of skilled individuals.
The General Stream is designed for skilled workers in a wide range of occupations and industry categories. Here are the key eligibility points for this stream:
Occupation Lists: Your chosen occupation must be listed on the WA Skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL). The WASMOL is divided into two schedules: Schedule 1 and Schedule 2. Your occupation should appear in either of these schedules to be considered for this stream.
Residency and Work Experience: While the specific requirements might vary, typically, you would need to have work experience in your nominated occupation. This could be either from within Australia or overseas.
Employment Contract: Some applicants might be required to have a full-time employment contract in WA for a minimum duration, usually in the nominated (or a closely related) occupation. However, there are exceptions, especially for those invited through certain sectors like the WA building and construction industry.
The Graduate Stream is tailored for international students who have completed their studies in Western Australia. Here's what you need to know about its eligibility:
Qualification: This stream is open to international students who have completed either vocational education and training (VET) or higher education qualifications in WA.
Occupation Lists: Your occupation should be listed on the Graduate occupation list (GOL). The GOL identifies priority occupations for those who have recently graduated from WA institutions.
Study Requirement: Typically, there's a requirement for the duration of study within WA. For instance, you might need to show that you've lived and studied in WA for a specified period, such as two years.
Level of Study: Depending on the specific criteria for the year, there might be requirements related to the level of your qualification. For instance, whether you've completed a Certificate III, Diploma, Bachelor's degree, or higher.
As per update on Migration WA website:
up to75% of SNMP graduate stream nominations will be made for higher education graduates; and
up to 25% of SNMP graduate stream nominations will be made for VET graduates
It's essential to note that both the WASMOL and GOL are dynamic lists. They are updated periodically to align with the changing workforce needs of Western Australia. As such, it's crucial to ensure that your occupation is currently listed when you apply.
Furthermore, all applicants, regardless of the stream, must also meet the Department of Home Affairs' criteria for the nominated visa. This includes meeting points tests, health, and character requirements.
In summary, the eligibility criteria for the State Nominated Migration Program are comprehensive, ensuring that Western Australia attracts skilled individuals who can contribute significantly to the state's growth and development. If you're considering applying, it's advisable to stay updated with the latest criteria and seek guidance if needed.
