Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

Main Criteria:

Sponsors for this visa must be “settled” in Australia, typically meaning they've been lawfully resident for two or more years.
Applicants must meet the balance of family test, which requires at least half of their children to be living in Australia as citizens or permanent residents, or more of their children to be living in Australia than in any other country.
The visa also requires sponsorship by an eligible person, typically the child, and the applicant must meet health and character requirements.

Cost:

A permanent "Contributory" visa. The initial application fee is AUD 4,765 (main applicant). A second instalment of AUD 43,600 is required for each applicant.

Assurance of Support:

An AoS is payable towards the time of decision. For two applicants, this is currently AUD 14,000. This bond is refunded ten years after entering Australia on the contributory parent visa, minus any debts owed to the Australian government.

Length of Stay: Permanent

Processing Times:

If you are over 65 years old, the Contributory Aged Parent Visa (subclass 864) might be more suitable as it allows you to stay in Australia while your application is processed.

Medicare:

If you've applied for a contributory parent visa (143 visa) and already have a temporary 173 or 884 visa, you can enrol for Medicare.
