Main Criteria:

• This visa allows parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia temporarily.

• If granted this visa and you wish to stay in Australia permanently, you can apply for the Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143).

• Applying for this temporary subclass 173 visa before the permanent subclass 143 visa allows you to spread the migration costs over several years.
  
  
  

Eligibility:

• You must have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.

• At least half of your children must live in Australia, or more of your children live in Australia than in any other country. You must meet balance of family test.
  
  

Length of Stay:

• 2 years
  

Fees:

• Initial Australian government fee for subclass 173: $3,055 for the main applicant.

• Before the visa is granted, a second instalment of $29,130 is required.

• Before the visa expires, an additional $19,420 must be paid to apply for the permanent visa subclass 143.

Process:

• Processing times for these visas are subject to capping and queuing.

• New Contributory Parent visa applications that meet the criteria to be queued are estimated to take at least 12 years for final processing.

Sponsor:

• You must be sponsored, usually by your child who must be 18 years or older and a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.

• Sponsors have financial and other responsibilities

Balance-of-family Test:

• At least half of your children must live permanently in Australia, or more of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country.

Health & Character:

Applicants must meet the health and character requirements

Debts:

• Any outstanding debts to the Australian government must be repaid or arranged to be repaid.

Benefits:

• Live in Australia for up to two years.

• Work and study in Australia (without government support).

• Enroll in Medicare, Australia's health-related care and expenses scheme.

• Travel to and from Australia multiple times for two years from the visa grant date.

• Apply for a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143).

Location:

• You can be in or outside Australia when applying for this visa, but you must be outside Australia when the visa is decided.

Duration:

• The visa lasts for two years, starting from the date of entry into Australia on the visa.

Family:

• Your partner and your or your partner's child or step-child can be included in the application.

Obligations:

• Visa holders and their family members must comply with Australian laws and visa conditions.
